Board of Directors
Paul A. Maeder
Mr. Maeder has served on our board of directors since February 2010 and as chairman of our board since November 2012. Mr. Maeder is a General Partner of Highland Capital Partners, a venture capital firm he co-founded in 1988. He currently serves of the boards of several private companies. He holds a B.S.E. in Aerospace and Mechanical Sciences from Princeton University, an M.S.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University and a M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School.
Chip Paucek is currently the co-founder and CEO of 2U, Inc., an education technology company founded in 2008 that partners with leading colleges and universities to deliver the world’s best online degree programs. In March 2014, he led the company’s successful Initial Public Offering, establishing 2U as one of the leaders in ed tech. Prior to 2U, Chip served as CEO of Smarterville, Inc., the parent company of Hooked on Phonics, and earlier as vice president of business development and president of Educate Products for Educate, Inc. Chip began his career in 1993 by co-founding Cerebellum Corporation, the media company behind the award-winning educational television program and video series, Standard Deviants, and led Cerebellum as co-chief executive officer until 2003. In 2004, Chip served as deputy campaign manager for the successful re-election campaign of United States Senator Barbara Mikulski.
Chip‘s innovative work at 2U has earned him many accolades, including the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2012, the Goldman Sachs 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs Award in 2013, and multiple Highest Rated CEO awards from Glassdoor. Chip holds a B.A. from The George Washington University and is currently enrolled in the 2U-powered MBA@UNC program at UNC Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School.
Mark J. Chernis
Mr. Chernis joined Pearson in June of 2011 following the acquisition of SchoolNet. He currently serves as the SVP of Strategic Partnerships and Investments and was previously the President and Chief Operating Officer of SchoolNet. Pearson is the leading global education company with employees in over 80 countries. The company’s goal is to help people of all ages to make measurable progress in their lives through learning. SchoolNet, at the time of its acquisition, was the leading provider of instructional management software. The company served hundreds of school districts across the United States, and was primarily owned by the Carlyle Group and other private investors.
Prior to Schoolnet, Mr. Chernis joined The Princeton Review in 1984 and served as the company’s Chief Operating Officer and Secretary beginning in 1995. In August 2000, he was appointed as President of the company. During his 24 year career at The Princeton Review, Mr. Chernis either held or oversaw key leadership positions in nearly every sector of the Company, including information technology, operations, product development and each of Princeton Review’s three operating divisions. Over the years he orchestrated more than 15 corporate acquisitions, sat on several corporate boards – including Schoolnet, Inc., and was instrumental in Princeton Review’s IPO in June of 2001.
Mr. Chernis attended Vassar College and now lives in Bedford, NY where he was a three times publicly elected member of the Board of Education for the Bedford Central School District.
Mr. Chernis also serves as a Board and Audit Committee member at 2U Inc., a publicly traded education company, partnering with preeminent institutions of higher education to deliver rigorous, selective degree programs online.
Timothy M. Haley
Mr. Haley has served on our board of directors since February 2010. Mr. Haley is a founding partner of Redpoint Ventures, a venture capital firm, and has been a Managing Director of the firm since 1999. Mr. Haley was also the managing director of Institutional Venture Partners, a venture capital firm, from 1998 to 2010. From 1986 to 1998, Mr. Haley was the president of Haley Associates, an executive recruiting firm in the high technology industry. Mr. Haley currently serves on the board of directors of Netflix, Inc. and several private companies. Mr. Haley holds a B.A. from Santa Clara University.
Sallie L. Krawcheck
Ms. Krawcheck will serve on our board of directors following the closing of this offering. Ms. Krawcheck has been the owner of 85 Broads, a professional women's networking organization, since May 2013. Ms. Krawcheck was the President of Global Wealth & Investment Management for Bank of America from August 2009 to September 2011. Prior to joining Bank of America, Ms. Krawcheck held a variety of senior executive positions at Citigroup from 2002 to 2008, including Chief Executive Officer of its Smith Barney division, Chief Financial Officer of Citigroup and Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Citi Global Wealth Management. She served as a director of BlackRock Inc. from 2009 to 2011 and Dell Inc. from 2006 to 2009. Ms. Krawcheck holds a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a M.B.A. from Columbia University.
John M. Larson
Mr. Larson has served on our board of directors since June 2009. Mr. Larson has served as the Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Triumph Higher Education Group, Inc., a culinary education company, since 2010. He also serves as President of Triumph Group, Inc., a company that advises and invests in domestic and international education companies. Mr. Larson founded and served as President, Chief Executive Officer and director of Career Education Corporation, or CEC, a publicly held post-secondary education company, from its inception in 1994 through his retirement from the company in 2006, including as Chairman of the Board from 2000 to 2006. He became Chairman Emeritus of CEC in 2006 and continues to serve in that position. He holds a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of California at Berkeley.
Mr. Lewis will serve on our board of directors following the closing of this offering. Since March 2013, Mr. Lewis has been the President of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, a philanthropic organization committed to advancing higher education, the arts and civil society. From January 2013 to March 2013, he served as President-designate of the Mellon Foundation. Prior to joining the Mellon Foundation, Mr. Lewis served as Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs at Emory University from 2004 to December 2012. He also held a variety of faculty positions at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Michigan from 1984 through 2004, and served as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs — Graduate Studies and dean of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan from 1998 to 2004. Mr. Lewis holds a B.A. from Concordia College and a M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.
Edward S. Macias
Mr. Macias has served on the board of directors since November 2014. He is the provost emeritus and the Barbara and David Thomas Distinguished Professor in Arts & Sciences for Washington University in St. Louis, where he served as chief academic officer for 25 years, before stepping down from his position as provost and executive vice chancellor in June 2013. Mr. Macias joined the Arts & Sciences faculty in 1970 as an assistant professor of chemistry and became a full professor in 1984. In the 1980s, he added administrative roles to his full-time teaching and research, serving as the director of the Summer School program and chair of the Department of Chemistry. He was appointed provost in 1988, and in 1995 was named executive vice chancellor and dean of the faculty of Arts & Sciences. Mr. Macias holds a bachelor’s degree from Colgate University and a doctorate from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
A recognized human resources thought leader with more than 25 years of experience in aligning human resources programs with business objectives, Rushing has served as head of human resources for Equifax, a global leader in information technology, since 2006. Prior to Equifax, she served in several senior human resources roles for the Coca-Cola Company where she led all human resources functions for the global beverage company. Rushing also was the director of human resources for the Midwest division of Pizza Hut and worked at IBM in several human resources management positions.
A native of Virginia, Rushing received her bachelor’s degree in industrial psychology from East Carolina University and holds a master’s degree in human resources and counseling from George Washington University. She is also certified as a senior professional in human resources from the Society of Human Resource Management, where she serves on the board of directors and is a member if its compensation committee. She is also a current board member for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Atlanta where she serves on the finance committee.
Robert M. Stavis
Mr. Stavis has served on our board of directors since April 2011. Mr. Stavis has been a partner at Bessemer Venture Partners, a venture capital firm, since 2000. Prior to joining Bessemer, Mr. Stavis was an independent private equity investor. Prior to that, he served in various positions at Salomon Smith Barney, including as co-head of global arbitrage trading. Mr. Stavis holds a B.A.S. in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and a B.S. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.
