Earl Lewis

President of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

Mr. Lewis has served on our board of directors since May 2014. Since March 2013, Mr. Lewis has been the President of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, a philanthropic organization committed to advancing higher education, the arts and civil society. From January 2013 to March 2013, he served as President-designate of the Mellon Foundation. Prior to joining the Mellon Foundation, Mr. Lewis served as Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs at Emory University from 2004 to December 2012. He also held a variety of faculty positions at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Michigan from 1984 through 2004, and served as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs — Graduate Studies and dean of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan from 1998 to 2004. Mr. Lewis holds a B.A. from Concordia College and a M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.
